Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This list contains answers to the most common questions about the Sun Learning eXchange (SLX).
Browse Media (6)
All you need to use SLX is a Java & javascript-enabled browser, high-speed internet access, Flash player 9x or higher. You can check https://learning.sun.com/st_toolkit/common/pages/browser_test.html to see if these are in place.
The following widget will also check your version of Flash player. You can download an upgrade here.
Related Media includes other SLX uploads in the same category as the media you are currently browsing.
If you have reviewed all of the available FAQs and still have an issue with SLX, help is available from other members of the SLX community on the forums.
When you click a piece of media in SLX, you can add it to My Favorites by click the plus [+] sign directly below the media player. If you see a minus sign [-], you have already added this media to My Favorites.
If you like a particular piece of content submitted by a member of the SLX community, just click the submitter's name, which appears to the right of the video next to the submitter's profile picture.
Note: You cannot search by the submitter's name using the Search function at this time.
There are several ways to find content on SLX. The first is to use the Search function in the upper right-hand corner of each page. This search looks for keywords from the title, description, and tags for each piece of media. Note that you cannot search on a particular submitter's name at this time.
Another way to find content is the Most Popular, Most Viewed, and Recent selections, available in the blue menu bar. These will show you the media with the highest user ratings, the media that has been viewed most frequently on SLX, and the most recently-uploaded information on SLX.
If you are looking for a specific category of media, you can also browse by category in the left-hand channel of each media page. This will take you to media that were assigned to a specific category during the upload process so that you can browse and select the one that most closely meets your needs.

Create Media (15)
This seems to happen mostly to Mac Users and happens when uploading QuickTime (.mov) files that contain Windows Media Video.
That is a not supported combination and only playable on your Mac.
When you open a Windows Media Video (.wmv) on your Mac with the help of the Flip4Mac or Perian plugins, your QuickTime Player can read the files. Users with QuickTime Pro can then edit the files with QuickTime.
Unfortunately that does not re-encode the content, but saves a QuickTime (.mov) file containing Windows Media Video, which is an unsupported combination.
At some point, you may want to prevent users from viewing your media. Perhaps you need to update it, or it's no longer relevant. That's why the SLX gives you the option to unpublish and republish a piece of media.
Unpublishing a piece of media does not delete it, but it does make sure that other users cannot view the media and removes it from search results and tag browsing.
To unpublish a piece of media:
- Click My Media under your name in the upper left-hand portion of the main SLX window.
- Find the media you want to unpublish and click Hide Media in the blue box.
Note that the words Unpublished now appear as a watermark across this media entry, indicating that it is unpublished.
If you want to republish the media:
- Click My Media under your name in the upper left-hand portion of the main SLX window.
- Find the media you want to republish, and click Publish Media.
Note that the Unpublished watermark disappears, indicating that the media is now available to SLX users.
You can update a piece of media you've already uploaded to the SLX by completing the following steps:
- Go to the media you'd like to update and click Edit.
- Click Upload Media in the blue bar.
- Deselect the Active checkbox next to the existing media and click Update.
- Click Browse under "Pick a File to Upload" and locate the updated file.
- Click Upload.
All SLX users have the option of creating video using the Veodia plugin.
In addition, Sun employees can download and install Camtasia 5 from CSIT:
1. Go to https://downloadlibrary.central.sun.com/cgi-bin/sw-lib/download.cgi?suni...
2. Log in with your Sun ID and LDAP password.
3. Select Camtasia 5.0 from the drop-down menu and use this password:
HNCHA-9FC5P-56DHL-PWTKM-M7B34 (be sure there are no trailing spaces on the password).
There are many resources available on TechSmith's web site about using Camtasia including this video tutorial tailored specifically to version 5.
Yes, you can create a video in SLX using Veodia by completing the following steps:
-
Log in to your SLX account and click on "Upload Media"
-
Fill out the information in the form, following the instructions on the right.
-
Scroll down the page and click on the "Submit" button.
-
You can now add the content to this new video. Click on "Video Record" to display the Veodia widget.
-
You will need to install the Veodia plugin. Click the link in the widget to download and install the Veodia plugin (you might need to allow pop-up windows).
Once the plugin is installed, you should see the video from your webcam. When you are ready to record, press on "Start Recording".
-
When you are finished, press "Stop Recording". After a few moments, your video will be played back to you.
If you're satisfied, press "Add to Page". If not, you can record a new one by clicking on "Start Over".
-
When you click on "Add to Page", the video is published on Sun Learning eXchange.
Currently, the SLX transforms all video into 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio and outputs video in 640x480 dpi regardless of the input size. If you upload a video that is a different ratio, it will generate black borders around the video on SLX. If you upload something in a lower resolution, the quality will be degraded when viewing from SLX.
In some cases, a screencast of a very high resolution screen will be difficult to see on SLX.
One way to improve legibility of the video content is to select a smaller region of the screen when recording or use software that allows users to "zoom in" on the relevant portion of the screen. There are many tools that provide these options, some of which are described in screencasts right here on SLX: https://slx.sun.com/search/node/screencast
Although Sun Learning Exchange supports several audio formats for video content, the only acceptable format for podcasts (audio-only) is MP3.
There are several things that could cause this:
- If you are not a Sun employee, you cannot upload media at this time.
- If you are a Sun employee, and are logging in to SLX for the first time--or browsing to SLX from another My Sun Online site such as Big Admin, SDN, or pwtraining, try refreshing your browser window. Sometimes it takes a refresh to make Upload Media display in the secondary menu under the blue Sun menu bar the first time you access SLX.
- If that does not resolve your issue, and you have browsed to SLX from another site that uses Sun's Single Sign-On, be sure that you logged in using your @sun.com email address and LDAP password. If you have another My Sun Online login, it will not grant you upload privileges on SLX. To log out, go to http://slx.sun.com/logout and log in again with your @sun.com email address and LDAP password.
You can change the category for a piece of media you have uploaded by completing the following steps:
- Click on My Media and select Edit Info for the piece of media you want to recategorize.
- Click Remove next to the category you wish to change under Current Categories.
- Select the category and/or sub-categories you want to add for this piece of media and click Add.
- Click Submit to save your changes.
If you have reviewed all of the available FAQs and still have an issue with SLX, help is available from other members of the SLX community on the forums.
Generic Requirements
- All Videos must contain an audio track.
- In videos with multiple audio tracks, bitrates must be the same.
- In some cases, users have sent videos with 10 audio tracks. The file will be accepted only all audio tracks have the same bitrate.
- Dimensions must be in multiples of 8.
Ex: If the source file is 400x225. It must be modified to 400x224. Otherwise, it will fail. - If the frames per second (fps) is less than the encoding profile, the job will fail. Please be sure to select a low enough fps to accommodate UGC users. Recommended is 15 fps.
- Note that webcam user content includes a very low frame rate. Our engineers recommend 10 fps for those instances.
- All codecs used in creating the source video must come from licensed software.

Accepted Audio Formats for Videos
Note: The only acceptable format for podcasts (audio-only) is MP3.
Not Supported
The SLX upload requirements are documented at: Supported Formats. The most common reasons for failed uploads or distorted videos are:
- The video dimensions are not multiples of 8.
- The video has no audio tracks.
- The video has protected audio tracks (DRM).
- The video is encoded in an unsupported format (i.e. MP4 Baseline).
Fix the problem and try to upload the corrected version again.

If you have the right permissions, you should see a link Upload Media. Click here for a visual cue or keep reading for step-by-step instructions.
Any Sun employee can add content to the Sun Learning eXchange (SLX). To add content, complete the following steps:
- Log in to SLX and click Upload in the menu options below the blue header bar.
- This takes you to the Submit Media form where you can specify the following:
- Title
- Description
- Categories - Specifying a category and one or more subcategories will help users easily locate your content.
- Audiences - Specifying employee, partners, or public here determines which user groups can access the content you're about to upload.
- Once you have specified these fields, click Submit to continue.
- Then select Video, Audio, or PDF depending on which type of content you need to upload.
- Click Browse to locate the content on your local computer.
- Click Upload once you have located the content you want to upload.
A message that says "Your media is uploading" displays. This step may take several minutes depending on file size and your connection speed.
Once your file has finished uploading, it will take several minutes before you can see the video under My Media or All Media.
The Sun Learning eXchange (SLX) uses the same authentication as other My Sun communities such as my.sun.com, BigAdmin, and the Sun Developers Network. If you already have a username/password at one of those sites, or are a Sun employee or contractor, you can already log in to SLX! Sun employees and most contractors log in with their first.last@sun.com email as a username, and their LDAP password. Other users log in with their existing My Sun Online Account.
If you do not have a My Sun Online Account, simply click the "register" link in the login page and the session is redirected to the My Sun Connection, Sun's customer facing identity platform used by customers and partners. Complete the registration process, log in, and return to SLX.

Maybe. Currently, SLX is optimized to work with the iPhone/iTouch devices. It is possible that you could access SLX through another mobile device that has internet connectivity, a browser, and the ability to play Flash videos, MP3s, or PDFs. Keep in mind, however, that these devices would be attempting to use the full browser version of SLX, which poses some bandwidth and viewing challenges.
Publish Media (11)
Currently, the SLX Help Desk manages the creation of channels.
When deciding whether or not you need a channel (instead of, for example, using an existing category or creating a tag), consider the following:
- Do you need to restrict content to a group that is not already defined by "audience" (i.e. Sun employees, Sun employees + partners, or members of the public)?
- Do you have a large series of content (>20) that you'd like to post to SLX?
If you answered Yes to either of these questions, submit a support request to the SLX Help Desk with the following information:
- Channel Name (this is what folks will see when they go to subscribe to the channel)
- Description (a 1 sentence description of what this channel is for and how you want folks to use it)
- Access: Is this for employees only, employees & partners, or employees, partners & members of the public?
- Long Description (if you have additional information beyond the 1-2 sentence description above)
- Subscription Type (this controls how folks subscribe to the channel. The options are:
- open - anyone can subscribe to this channel without approval.
- moderated - membership requests must be approved by a moderator.
- invite only - membership must be created by a member of the group.
- closed - membership is exclusively managed by the channel administrator.
Channels provide a way for SLX users to refine access to media they upload beyond specifying an audience (employees, employees plus partners, or public).
Click Channels in the blue bar at the top of the page to see the channels that are available for you to join. You can join channels that have a Join link instantly, ones that say Request Membership require the approval of the channel's moderator.
Once you have joined on or more channels, you will be given the option of assigning media that you upload to that that channel. You can use the Private checkbox in the Upload Media window to prevent those who are not members of the channel from accessing the media.
You can further refine the group who can access the content by using the Audience buttons. For example, if you are a member of XYZ Channel, you can specify that only Employees in the XYZ Channel can access the media you are uploading by specifying XYZ Channel, marking the content Private, and selecting Employees at Audience.
This message and ones like it mean that your video could not be encoded by SLX and needs to be corrected before it can be uploaded.
For example, the following error displays when the system that transcodes the videos discovers a "black spot" in the upload, most likely caused by a missing key frame:
Error:Prefilter failed: Error [10]: Unexpected error detected (Error extracting video: [0x8000ffff])
- Click Submit to save your changes.

https://reg.sun.com//accounthelp?program=portal&goto=https://portal.sun....

If you see the above pop up in Internet Explorer, you need to change your security settings in
Internet Options-> Security
to allow display of mixed content.

Manage Media (11)
Related Media includes other SLX uploads in the same category as the media you are currently browsing.
If you have reviewed all of the available FAQs and still have an issue with SLX, help is available from other members of the SLX community on the forums.
Generic Requirements
- All Videos must contain an audio track.
- In videos with multiple audio tracks, bitrates must be the same.
- In some cases, users have sent videos with 10 audio tracks. The file will be accepted only all audio tracks have the same bitrate.

Ex: If the source file is 400x225. It must be modified to 400x224. Otherwise, it will fail. - If the frames per second (fps) is less than the encoding profile, the job will fail. Please be sure to select a low enough fps to accommodate UGC users. Recommended is 15 fps.
